We currently have one active master thesis proposal, open for students in Gothenburg studying either at Chalmers University of Technology or University of Gothenburg.
Predictive Mathematical Modelling for Global Shipping Costs
Master Thesis - 30 HP
Are you interested in mathematical modelling, statistics, and using real-world data to solve complex problems? At the Gothenburg scale-up company Sendify, we offer an opportunity to apply your skills in a practical and meaningful context.
Goal
The goal of this thesis is to develop a state-of-the-art mathematical model that predicts shipment costs with a high degree of accuracy. This model will take into account a wide range of variables, from package weight to local taxes and international tariffs, and you will have access to data points from millions of shipments in our platform to solve one of the logistics industry’s key challenges.
Background
Since Sendify’s start in 2016, our goal has been to to level the playing field within logistics, to give small businesses access to prices and services normally reserved for the big players. With over 27,000 connected businesses, we are well on our way there.
The method we use to level the playing field is called collaborative shipping. This approach allows small businesses to access the same benefits as high-volume shippers, providing them with competitive rates and simplified logistics based on their needs.
However, as our network of carriers has grown, so has the complexity of their pricing models. Each carrier introduces a variety of factors—such as weight, dimensions, routes, taxes, and tariffs—making accurate cost predictions increasingly challenging.
Currently, much of the cost prediction process relies on manual calculations, leading to inefficiencies and sometimes inaccuracies. We aim to address this by introducing a more data-driven and mathematical solution, to be able to deliver accurate prices up-front.
What is the project about?
This master thesis project focuses on building a robust mathematical model that accurately predicts shipping costs based on various factors, including package dimensions, distance, carrier fees, local taxes, and international tariffs, based on a large amount of real-world data points. The goal is to replace manual calculations with an automated model that simplifies the complexities of carrier pricing, while delivering a correct cost upfront for our users.
Who are you?
We are looking for students with strong mathematical skills and proficiency in any programming language to help us build and validate this model.
In addition to solving an exciting challenge, you’ll gain first-hand experience working in a fast-moving startup, where innovation and new ideas are encouraged. You will also have the opportunity to directly impact the future of shipping logistics and make a tangible difference for small businesses.
Working at Sendify
Our office is located in Johanneberg, Gothenburg, just a few minutes’ walk from the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus. Our product team consists of a diverse group of software engineers, data analysts, and designers, many of whom are Chalmers alumni.
At Sendify we value personal autonomy and encourage our team members to challenge and explore. At the same time, we put emphasis on collaboration where the team grows and learns together.
If you’re excited to push the boundaries of predictive pricing models while working closely with a fast-moving startup, we’d love to hear from you!
